Thanks to the collective efforts of the Akumin community, we raised approximately $90,500, which was generously matched by the AMP Foundation, bringing the total to around $181,000. This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without your compassion, generosity, and commitment to making a difference.

As part of this initiative, I took part in an immersive experience where I assumed the identity of “Mike” — a man who had lost his job, family, and home, and was living homeless in Martin Place while battling addiction. Navigating from one support agency to another highlighted the significant barriers many people face, including substance dependency, the need for a permanent address, and the limited availability of accommodation. It was only through the support of Vinnies that I was able to access critical assistance. This experience reinforced the invaluable role that community organisations play in providing crisis accommodation, meals, guidance, and pathways to recovery.

Hearing the stories of others on similar journeys further emphasised the importance of support, courage, and human connection. It reminded me that asking for help is often the first step towards rebuilding a life and finding a sense of belonging.

During the night, I was joined by Matt Lawler, CEO of Akumin, Edwina Maloney, Group Executive of My North, and Peter Audit, CEO of Varia Group. Together, we spent the night under the stars at White Bay Cruise Terminal, sleeping on cardboard with only a sleeping bag for shelter. While only a brief glimpse into the realities faced by many Australians, it was a powerful and humbling experience that deepened my understanding, empathy, and appreciation for the challenges associated with homelessness.
